On July 4, 1776, King George III of England sat in his cloistered castle thinking that it was just another boring day in his over-privileged royal life. At the end of that day he inscribed these words in his diary, “Nothing of significance happened today.” What King George III did not know was that across the Atlantic Ocean a political shot was fired “heard round the world.” The United States of America was born! Based on months old reports, the king surely knew the general climate in the colonies was impending revolution. He also knew that his own past actions had played a significant role in the happenings of the day. But the details of that day's significance were lost to him an ocean away.

In the 21st century it is easy for some privileged Christians in America to assume that nothing much is happening in the worldwide church. However, the truth is that we are living in an era of unprecedented spiritual harvest. While the church in America seems to be slipping into a holding mode, there are huge turnings to Christ in many developing nations.  Some mission’s analysts report that about 80,000 people are coming to Christ in the world each day!

Fortunately, Cornerstone Church is not unaware or uninvolved in the exciting things God is doing in the rest of the world.

The recent visit by Dr. Eyasu from Ethiopia highlighted the worldwide impact that Cornerstone Church has in one of those “hot spots” of Christ’s kingdom. Though surrounded by many antagonistic Muslim nations, God has raised up the Ethiopian Kale Heywet Church to number over 8 million souls! Church growth in Ethiopia is so rapid that the ratio of pastor to church is 1:20. That’s only one pastor available for every twenty churches. Many of these pastors are young, inexperienced as leaders and untrained in basic Bible doctrines. So the churches are vulnerable to human faults, false teachers and theological error. Into this gap God led Cornerstone Church to offer guidance and help.

In the next few months we will be investing heavily in an ingenious plan to train 9,000 pastors in Ethiopia. That’s a monumental task! This plan will be officially launched in January 2018 thanks to a creative strategic plan engineered by Dennis Neal and the EKHC leadership team. The projected foundational leadership training is based on the text book, Pastoring the Flock of God, written by Pastor Jerry and the companion book by Billy Graham, The Christian Worker’s Handbook. In addition to training the current 9000 active pastors, these two books will be required courses on the principles of pastoral ministry in the 145 vernacular Bible Schools of the Kale Heywet Church. So future generations of pastors will be given this training at the student level.

Last month, two significant decisions were made that will impact the world for Jesus Christ through Cornerstone. First, the Elder board decided to officially give assent to the development of the Cornerstone School of Ministry. The details of this school are still in their formative stages. The future looks very exciting for the development of future Christian leaders right here at Cornerstone. I’ve given Pastor Terry Miller the task of leading this new initiative. Please pray for this venture which will be unveiled in the months to come. The second significant decision is this. Cornerstone’s Mission’s Management Team decided to hire a media consultant to prepare eleven digital lessons (in English) based on the book, Pastoring the Flock of God, for online distribution anywhere in the world. Online learning is the fastest growing delivery system for education today. Using modern technology, Cornerstone is poised to wade into this fast moving stream. There is already interest in these interactive lessons by a Christian training ministry that serves nearly 10,000 students from 130 countries. But there is another innovative possibility for this online program. It is possible that Cornerstone School of Ministry could one day offer online training to pastors and Christian leaders around the world!

With these exciting prospects on the horizon, we must remain anchored in the Word of God and prayer. Cornerstone began sixteen years ago as a prayer meeting on 9-11. Many years later Cornerstone has become, by the grace of God, a church with worldwide impact. That impact for Christ will only continue to be fruitful as we remember what brought us to this point. So let me urge you to pray daily for Cornerstone Church, for the leaders whom God has appointed and for our ministry both at home and around the world.
