Jesus has left the building! That’s the title of a song by gospel-artist, Buddy Greene, in which he tells how Jesus uses His saints to respond to the needs of those outside the walls of the church. A verse of the song says…

He’s out helping the homeless find shelter

He’s out helping the jobless find work

He’s donating his time to the feeble of mind

And for this, some people think he’s berserk!

For the past 10 years a group from Cornerstone Church has been following in Jesus’ footsteps each month by serving at Christian Outreach in Action. Located in downtown Long Beach, COA is a nondenominational, nonprofit organization that has been providing compassionate assistance to those in need for more than 37 years. The ministry faithfully feeds the hungry and shares the Good News, providing encouragement and guidance for those who are seeking self-sufficiency.

Each month, a Cornerstone team (sponsored by the Truth 101 Adult Bible Fellowship) shares a gospel message and a hot meal with those who visit COA. The team is composed of three groups, each of which offers opportunities to serve. Volunteers can help prepare food (cooked at Cornerstone and completed at COA), serve meals (greeting and serving our guests), or contribute their gifts to the gospel ministry team (music, message, and personal interaction).

Time and again, the Lord has worked in and through the lives of our volunteers. One of these faithful servants, Michelle Lizotte, recently felt the Holy Spirit nudge her to talk to a middle-aged lady. Following the chapel service the lady was ushered to the dining room with others for the evening meal. Michelle found her and after introducing herself, asked if she may pray for a need.

“Yes,” replied the woman, “you can pray for my salvation and my daughter’s salvation.”

Michelle then asked, “Do you want to be sure of your salvation right now?”

Tears flowed as the lady related the hurt and emptiness she felt. Ultimately, Michelle and the woman prayed the prayer of faith together. Hugs followed as Michelle provided encouragement and offered contact information for Cornerstone Church.

So, how can you help? First, we invite you to pray, since we know that “The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.” James 5:16. Please pray for the lost on the streets of our city, pray for their release from the scourge of addiction and pray that their empty hearts and stomachs may be filled as God’s people respond to their need. Finally, pray for the Cornerstone team as they persevere in this ministry.

Ask God if He wants to use you in this ministry of reconciliation. Pray for insight into how your gifts may be used and be open to the possibility that the Lord may be inviting you to help cook, serve a hot meal, or minister to those who are feeling lost and lonely. Anyone can join the COA team!

Our Lord Jesus described his faithful servants in Matthew chapter 25:35-36, 40. He said, “For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me. Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.”

Are you ready to serve the Lord in this way?  Are you ready to “leave the building?”
